Five years ago, Beverly Churchfield of Mission Viejo was browsing in an antique shop when an unusual but striking narrow object caught her eye. It was a rare Victorian hat pin. That single hat pin started her on a collection that now numbers more than and is worth thousands of dollars. Once she acquired the first antique pin, Churchfield wanted to display it in a Victorian hat-pin holder. But buying the holder created the need for more pins because it had many holes, like a large saltshaker. When she began her search to find other pins to fill the holes, her passing fancy grew into a grand obsession. There are even cases of people having been killed by hat pins, back then. Around , the hats got smaller and so did the hat pins.

Anything small enough to fit on a shank seems to eventually be destined to be offered as a hatpin. The faked pin, left, is made from a modern Kewpie-like charm; an original Kewpie hatpin is shown on the right. An authentic hatpin has three distinct parts: 1 the head, 2 the shank, and 3 the finding. The head, also called the ornament, is the decorative part of the hatpin. The shank is the pointed metal shaft the head is mounted on.
A finding is a small piece of metal used to hide the joint where the head is mounted on the shaft.
Back in the heyday of big hats, women used their hatpins as weapons for self-defense.
Such was the false dichotomy that faced Barack Obama during his April 16 debate against Hillary Clinton , when Charlie Gibson asked Obama a voter question about why he did not wear a flag pin on his lapel. Instead I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe When it came up again during the April debate, he made a similar point. Short of wearing a stars and stripes onesie, the flag lapel pin is the quickest sartorial method for a politician to telegraph his or her patriotism.
The origin of the flag lapel pin is murky, though it is by necessity linked the history of the American flag as a commonly used symbol. According to Marc Leepson’s Flag: An American Biography , the “near religious reverence many Americans have” for our national symbol dates only to the Civil War era not back to the Revolutionary War, as many assume. When the Confederates started winning battles early on in the War Between the States, Northerners began to fly the flag as a sign of pride.
Since then, flag imagery has been intricately tied to moments of crisis or conflict. He says the flag lapel pins in his collection don’t really date back before mid-century.

Pin trading is the practice of buying, selling, and exchanging collectible pins — most often lapel pins associated with a particular common theme, as well as related items — such as lanyards , bags, and hats to store and display the pins — as a hobby. Collectible pins used in pin trading are often found in amusement parks and resorts ; the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts, for example, are venues where Disney pin trading has become a popular activity, and similar pin trading activities are popular at comparable venues such as SeaWorld , Universal Resorts , and at Six Flags theme parks.
Pin trading at particular venues and events is often governed by rules of etiquette particular to the venue or occasion. Participating teams, marching bands, floats, sponsors, and the parade’s Grand Marshal each have their own custom pin. Many clubs, sports teams, events, and churches trade and collect custom pins that were made specifically for their organization. Quick manufacturing processes allow these pins to be produced at a low cost and in small quantities.

Hello Dale, I find your dvds very well done and watch each project several times until I have the instructions clearly in my mind. My skill level has certainly increased from receiving your instruction. They are to be about 6″ long each. I am wondering what gauge and temper you recommend. I am thinking gauge and spring hard, but I wanted to be sure before I begin. Neat project order Adrien! Definitely gauge or even gauge, in either a full or spring hard, depending on how you plan to embellish them.
We had a small discussion about using Copper Wire for Hat Pins you might find helpful. I always like to hear when my instruction helps someone move through this twisted wire world of ours — thanks! Have a Question?
